The Big Atlas Weekend started in 2021 as a way to engage all atlasers across North America. We aim to increase awareness of Atlas projects, motivate atlasers and help them increase their enjoyment observing breeding birds, fill in data gaps, and unite the entire atlasing community.

Big Atlas Weekend is based on traditional Big Day events but extends it to a weekend. Atlasers go out in their respective regions the last full weekend in June to document breeding behaviors while at the same time competing in challenges.

In addition to the individual challenges, there is an overall winner assigned to the Atlas project with the most data contributed per capita.
